Austin Framing Realities from Pier and Beam Bungalows to New Condos
When we drive down to Austin in Travis County, we see every kind of framing condition imaginable. An older bungalow sitting on cedar posts or concrete piers moves differently than a modern concrete slab foundation in a new build. When a house settles on pier and beam, the bathroom walls often shift out of plumb. The studs behind an old tub can bow inward or twist over decades of humidity. If you try to stick tile straight onto crooked studs without checking them with a six foot level first, your tile face will cup, lippage will catch the light, and your corner joints will run wide at the top.
Newer construction in the area brings its own quirks. Fast framing often leaves corner studs doubled up unevenly or out of square by a half inch over a five foot run. If the back wall is not square to the side walls, every tile cut into the corner has to be scribed individually at an angle, or the grout line will look like a wedge. We look at the framing before anything else gets fastened to the wall. We shim low studs, plane down high spots, and verify that the back wall sits dead square to the end walls so the installation stays flat.
Tearing Out the Old Surround and Checking the Tub Flange
Most tub surround jobs start by pulling out a cracked one piece fiberglass insert or knocking down loose, water damaged wall tile stuck to old green board. We strip the wet walls right down to the bare timber so we can see what is happening underneath. We look closely for signs of hidden plumbing leaks around the mixing valve and inspect the bottom plate for soft wood. The tub flange is the most critical junction in the entire wet area. That raised lip around the top rim of the tub must sit tight against the framing, resting securely so water running down the wall cannot slip behind the tub rim.

Substrate, Waterproofing, and Building Out the Niche
Tile and grout are not waterproof on their own. Water passes through grout pores and hairline fractures over time, so the wall behind the tile must be completely sealed. We hang rigid cementitious backer board or high density foam panels mechanically fastened with corrosion resistant screws. We leave an eighth inch gap above the tub flange so the board does not wick moisture off the tub deck. All panel seams and inside corners receive alkaline resistant mesh tape embedded in modified thinset mortar, followed by a continuous bonded waterproof membrane applied across the entire wet zone.
If you want an inset shampoo niche, we build the rough framing between the existing studs, keeping the sill sloped a quarter inch per foot toward the tub so standing water drains back into the basin. We wrap the entire niche cavity in the same bonded waterproof membrane, ensuring the corner seams overlap without voids. We position the niche so it lands naturally within the tile layout rather than cutting an awkward sliver of tile above or below the opening. Doing the prep correctly takes time, but it keeps the wall cavity dry for years.
Setting Level Courses Across Three Walls and Finishing Edges
Setting field tile starts with establishing a true level reference line around all three walls. Tub decks are rarely perfectly level from end to end. If you start setting full tiles directly off the tub rim, your horizontal grout lines will follow whatever slope the tub has, resulting in crooked lines by the time you reach the shower head. We shoot a level line, measure down to the lowest point on the tub, and cut the entire bottom row of tile to match the tub contour. This keeps every course above it straight, plumb, and aligned across the back and side walls.
We work with porcelain, ceramic, marble, zellige, terrazzo, and mosaic. Whether you choose large format porcelain or handmade zellige with wavy edges, we check our layout constantly to avoid narrow, awkward cuts at the ceiling and inside corners. Outside vertical edges where the tile meets painted drywall get finished cleanly with satin or brass edge profiles, or matching bullnose pieces. We comb the thinset mortar in straight, horizontal ridges using the correct notched trowel size, then collapse the ridges fully to ensure solid coverage and strong adhesion behind every piece.
Grout Selection, Tub Deck Expansion Joints, and Cleanup
Once the thinset cures, we mix and pack the grout joints solid across the entire field. We pull our tile out of the Temple supply house, so what you pick out is what gets set in your home. We wash the face of the tile with clean water and dense sponges to leave clean, consistent joint depths without washing out the color pigments. After the grout dries and we buff off the residual haze, the job is not finished until we address the movement joints. Houses expand and contract with seasonal weather changes, so rigid grout must never be used where planes meet.
We leave the inside vertical corners and the horizontal joint between the bottom row of tile and the tub deck free of grout. Instead, we fill those joints with a color matched, flexible, one hundred percent silicone sealant. Silicone stretches and compresses as the tub flexes under water weight, preventing the cracking and black mold that happen when hard grout breaks loose at the tub rim. When the sealant is tooled smooth, we sweep up our debris, wipe down the tub, haul away our trash, and leave your bathroom clean.
