Standard cement, high performance blends, and epoxy grout
Standard cementitious grout is the traditional powder mixed with water on the job site. It fills joints cleanly and cures hard, but it remains porous throughout its life. Water, cooking oils, and dirty mop water will soak right into it unless you keep up with liquid sealers every year. It works fine for low-moisture areas or basic dry walls, but it demands regular maintenance if you put it on a busy floor or inside a wet shower enclosure.
High performance cement grouts come pre-mixed or use specialized polymers instead of standard Portland cement. They resist efflorescence, hold uniform color across the entire room, and block water absorption much better than basic cement. Epoxy grout is completely different because it uses resin and hardener with no Portland cement at all. Epoxy does not absorb water, resists harsh chemicals, never requires a sealer, and will not stain from red wine or grease, though it requires fast, skilled hands during installation before it sets.
Matching sanded or unsanded grout to your joint width
Joint width determines whether your grout needs sand aggregates to hold its structure without shrinking and cracking. When we pull materials from the Temple supply house for a job, we match the grout formulation directly to the tile edges and the spacing you selected. Rectified porcelain with razor-sharp edges allows tight joints, while handmade zellige, natural stone, or pressed ceramic tiles need wider joints to accommodate variations in tile size.

Water passes directly through cement grout joints, dampening the setting bed behind the tile every time you run the shower. When a shower leaks into a ceiling or rots a subfloor, the problem is never cracked grout. The real failure happened in the waterproof pan, the wall membrane, or the pipe flashing behind the tile assembly.
Tile and grout function as the wear layer, protecting the underlying surfaces from physical damage while looking finished. The actual waterproofing is a continuous, bonded membrane installed over the backer board and sloped pan before the first tile is ever set. Blaming a leak on a missing piece of grout overlooks the plumbing and pan testing that should have kept the framing dry. Grout needs to stay solid, but the hidden substrate does the heavy lifting.

Hard grout cures into a rigid masonry block that cannot handle movement.
