Finding the control line and balancing perimeter cuts
Every room has quirks, and almost no room in Central Texas has four perfectly square corners. If you start setting full tiles directly against the longest baseboard, any taper in the framing gets telegraphed across the floor. By the time you reach the opposite wall, you might end up with a full tile on one side and a half inch sliver on the other. Slivers look sloppy and are difficult to secure properly into the mortar bed.
To prevent awkward edges, we snap chalk lines to establish a true center point and measure out to every perimeter wall. If a centered layout leaves narrow slivers along the baseboards, we shift the control line by half a tile width. That movement gives you equal, wider cuts on both ends of the space. Balancing cuts this way makes the floor look intentional, even when the framing underneath runs crooked by an inch from corner to corner.
Offset patterns and why large tiles require strict limits
Running bond is a common pattern for subway tiles and large format planks, but the size of the tile dictates how far you can stagger the joints. Many porcelain planks bought from the supply house in Temple have a slight upward crown in the center caused by the firing process in the kiln.
- A fifty-fifty offset places the highest point of one tile directly next to the lowest corner of the adjacent tile.
- Staggering joints at one third of the tile length or less keeps lippage within acceptable industry limits.
- Clips and leveling wedges hold the edges flush while the thinset cures beneath the slab.
- Flat substrates prevent high spots from lifting corners and creating hard trip hazards underfoot.

Herringbone layout and calculating material waste
Herringbone looks sharp in a shower pan, on a kitchen wall, or across an entryway, but it changes how cuts fall across the entire surface. Because every piece meets at a ninety degree angle turned forty-five degrees to the wall, every single perimeter tile requires an angled cut. This means you cannot simply reuse offcuts on the opposite side of the room.
When you install a herringbone pattern with ceramic, marble, or porcelain, you must account for significantly more cutting waste than a standard grid. The points of the pattern also highlight any wall that leans out of plumb. Setting this pattern takes patience, careful dry-fitting, and crisp cuts with a wet saw. We take the time to center the main directional spine of the herringbone on the focal point of the room, such as the plumbing fixtures or the entryway opening.
Stack bond grids and substrate preparation
Stack bond runs all vertical and horizontal grout lines in straight, unbroken grids. It gives a clean, modern look, but it is the most unforgiving layout in the tile trade. In a running bond layout, staggered joints hide slight variations in tile dimensions or small dips in the wall. In a stack bond layout, even a tiny deviation throws the entire grid visibly out of square.
If a wall has a bow or a floor has a low dip, stack bond will expose it immediately at the four-corner intersections. Before installing stack bond porcelain, terrazzo, or zellige, the substrate must be flat, clean, and plumb. We check the walls with a long level and float out low areas before spreading mortar. When finishing exposed corners on vertical stack installations, we use satin or brass edge profiles to keep the exterior corners straight and protected from chipping.
Scribing cuts and absorbing out of square walls
When walls are out of square, the goal is to absorb the runout where the eye will not track it. Scribing means marking the exact contour of the wall onto the back of the tile and cutting it along that angle.
