A standard shower curb acts as a dam at the doorway. It stands three to four inches above the bathroom floor, built from stacked wood studs or preformed foam blocks wrapped in a bonded waterproof membrane. The curb gives us a clear stopping point for the shower pan slope. Water stays trapped inside the pan area even when the shower head runs at full volume. If you step over a curb every day without trouble, this setup is straightforward to build on concrete slabs or wood subfloors. It requires minimal modification to the existing floor joists.
A curbless entry removes that step completely. The bathroom floor flows directly into the shower pan with no raised lip. This design is clean and easy to walk into, but it demands precise slope management. The shower floor must drop away from the entry threshold toward the drain at a steady slope of one quarter inch per foot. If the entry line is not level or the slope is shallow, water will creep across the bathroom floor. We check your floor framing and drain location before recommending a curbless build.
Framing and floor modifications for curbless showers
Going curbless means the shower drain must sit lower than the finished bathroom floor. On a concrete slab, this usually requires chipping out the concrete foundation to recess the shower pan area. On a wood framed floor, we have to lower the subfloor between the joists to create the necessary drop. You cannot simply lay tile flat across the transition and expect the water to stay inside.

Pan drainage across wide walk-in footprints
Wide walk-in showers have a lot of floor area to drain. A standard center point drain requires a four-way slope, meaning the tile slopes down from all four walls toward the middle. When you use large format porcelain or marble tiles on a four-way slope, you have to make diagonal relief cuts across the tile so it sits flat without lippage. Alternatively, smaller mosaic tiles bend naturally over the compound curves of a sloped pan. We lay out the tile dry first to see where cuts fall around the drain body.
Linear drains work differently and fit wide walk-in layouts well. A linear drain sits against the back wall or right at the entry threshold, allowing the entire shower pan to slope in a single flat plane. This single slope means you can use large format porcelain or ceramic tiles without cutting them into small triangles. The drain trough must be set dead level, and the subfloor underneath must be solid so the long drain body never flexes under foot traffic.
Anchoring heavy glass panels and doors into tile
Walk-in showers often use fixed glass panels or heavy frameless glass doors to keep overspray inside the wet area. Glass panels put intense point loads on the wall studs and floor tiles. Before any tile goes on the wall, we verify solid wood blocking is installed inside the wall cavity where the glass hinges and brackets will mount. Fasteners driven solely into drywall anchors or tile backer board will pull loose over time under the weight of thick tempered glass.
When drilling through hard porcelain, marble, or ceramic tile to set glass clips, we use diamond core bits with water cooling. Hammer drills will crack the tile and compromise the waterproof membrane behind it. We drill slowly through the tile and backer board until the screw bites deep into the structural wood framing. Every screw hole gets filled with high grade sealant before the mounting bracket is tightened down so water cannot follow the screw thread into the wall framing.
Layout and waterproofing for built-in benches and niches
Shower niches and built-in benches add comfort, but they introduce horizontal surfaces where water can pool if they are built wrong. We frame niches between existing wall studs, keeping them out of direct spray lines whenever possible. The bottom shelf of the niche must tilt slightly into the shower pan, usually pitched about one eighth of an inch, so water drains off the tile face. Niches wrapped in zellige, mosaic, or subway tile get finished with brass or satin edge profiles to cover raw tile edges cleanly.
A tiled bench needs heavy structural support and complete waterproofing. Water sits on top of a seat longer than it sits on a vertical wall. We slope the bench top one quarter inch toward the shower floor and wrap the entire seat in continuous waterproof membrane tied into the wall system.
